Big Business, Big Solutions: Encouraging Corporate Social Responsibility
Moderator: A. Craig Copetas – Editor at Large, TRT World
Ibrahim Eren: General Director and Chairman of TRT World
Ilker Ayci: Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee of Turkish Airlines
Paul Polak: Founder, CEO, and Board Chairman of Windhorse International
Moderator A. Craig Copetas expanded on the roles big business can play in effecting social development and change:
“If you believe human beings are perfectly rational, then they can be left alone to make choices on their own accord; however, if you know that people don’t necessarily behave in their best interests, how do we nudge people to do the right thing?”
The panel discussed the need to spend money on humanitarian initiatives, and whether the same structures of ‘return on investment’ still apply. In many ways, the potential impact of social responsibility projects far outweigh the financial costs associated with establishing them.
Ilker Ayci emphasised the role Turkish Airlines holds in creating sustainable development and investing in human capital in Somalia. The benefits from such an alliance, and the potential it opens for relationships between the two nations, is paramount.
The panel also examined the importance of projects like the World Citizen Initiative, the impact altruism can have on the viewers of honest and human-centric news broadcasting, and the need to give people a chance to mobilise and contribute to social causes.
Other topics addressed included the psychology of markets; how do you drive big business to become involved in the community; how do you influence people to do the right thing; and are you willing to endanger your own position to do the right thing?
